SEE International "Sets Sights" on Peoples' Self-Help Housing Bringing Eye Care to Local Residents Most in Need

Carpinteria, CA. March 26, 2004—SEE International, the SantaBarbara based international organization providing sight restoring eye surgeries in developing countries, is providing its services to residents living at Dahlia Court and the Carpinteria Camper Park. Adults from both Peoples' Self-Help Housing developments will be examined by doctors at the health clinic located at the Dahlia Court Apartments.

SEE International volunteer technicians, optometrists and ophthalmologists will perform basic vision tests for all patients and glaucoma screenings for the adult patients. This program is part of the SEE International's Santa Barbara Vision Care Program (SBVCP) established to provide quality eye care to those in need in our community. The purpose of the clinic is to detect and prevent eye problems for patients early on. The SEE International Clinic Coordinator will walk the patients though all the steps of the follow up process including making doctors appointments, helping to prepare financial application, and attending pre-op and post-op appointments.

"We are so appreciative that SEE International is donating its time and residents to the residents of the Carpinteria Camper Park and Dahlia Court," said Jeanette Duncan, Executive Director of Peoples' Self-Help Housing. "Many of these families do not have adequate health care and eye-examinations are cost-prohibitive for most of them."

SEE International was founded in Santa Barbara, CA in 1974 by eye surgeon Harry S. Brown, M.D., F.A.C.S. with the purpose of providing sight-restoring eye surgeries for children and adults in developing countries. In the late 1980s, SEE International became concerned by the overwhelming number of people living in Santa Barbara County who could not afford vision care and were at risk for blindness and visual impairment. SEE International recognized and addressed this need by establishing The Santa Barbara Vision Care Program (SBVCP).

Peoples' Self-Help Housing is an award winning non-profit organization with over 30 years of experience developing housing for low-income and special needs households on California's Central Coast (Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Counties).
