Dear Friends & Neighbors,

I know first-hand how hard it is to find safe and affordable housing in SLO County. As a young teenager, I saw the difficulties my mother had in finding a home for our family as she struggled not only to secure a place she could afford, but where it was safe for a single woman to raise three daughters. Now as a board member for the longest-serving affordable housing organization in San Luis Obispo County, I get to personally hear about and observe the positive impact People’s Self-Help Housing is having on thousands of lives in our community. Each housing development it completes is its own little miracle. When residents move in, their lives begin to immediately change just by having the security of a safe and affordable home. As the former Mayor of Pismo Beach, President of the 5 Cities Homeless Coalition and member of the Women’s Legacy Fund, I know that affordable housing is one of the most important things we can provide for our communities. With it comes ready access to a myriad of services and educational opportunities and I can think of nothing more important than investing in the future of children and the care of their families. So, please join me today in supporting this amazing and impactful organization by sending in your generous gift.

It’s hard to do it alone.

In San Luis Obispo County, fair market rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $1,522. At a minimum wage of $13 per hour, 90 hours of work per week is needed to afford this. A full time worker, earning minimum wage can only afford $676 in rent. Someone trying to live on Social Security can only afford $283.

Government guidelines recommend that rent should not exceed 30% of income. Most renters in San Luis Obispo are spending at least 50% of their income on housing.

There is no place in the entire County where a full-time worker earning minimum wage can afford to rent a one-bedroom apartment. And many are just one financial challenge, such as a car repair or a medical bill, away from losing the roof over their head.
