Moving Day for Hard Working Families
August 11, 2010
TEMPLETON -- After nearly 12 months of back-breaking work, four families are moving into brand new homes.
The three bedroom, two bathroom houses are located on Terebinth Lane in Templeton.
The families are considered limited income.
They built the houses from the ground up with assistance from Peoples' Self-Help Housing, a local non-profit organization.
Each family spent at least 40 hours a week on site, totaling more than 1,800 hours.
"Finally I have a house, it still hasn't hit me yet," said Maria Sanchez-Cortes, a homeowner. "I'm still like, I need to move now, but it's just a really good reward, all the hard work we've done."
Peoples' Self-Help Housing calls it "sweat equity" -- labor that makes home ownership more affordable.
"It was like Christmas morning all night actually, I kept waking up," said Holly McNeil, a homeowner. "I was so excited about this because this is a huge opportunity."
Another group of ten families recently started building their homes.
Peoples' Self-Help Housing is still accepting applications for the development in Templeton.

In 1989, officials discovered that the company's pipes had been leaking petroleum products into the city's soil for years. In 1997, Unocal publicly claimed responsibility for the contamination and as part of its cleanup, the company set aside property for affordable housing.
The Lachen Tara Apartments is a 29-unit complex that includes studios, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments. Rents range from $400 to $700 per month.

Affordable Housing Comes to San Luis Obispo
THE VILLAS AT HIGUERA GRAND OPENING
April 17, 2008
Finding affordable housing anywhere in the area is becoming harder and harder. But some residents of San Luis Obispo have just received the keys to housing they never thought they'd have and it's all within their budget. The project by Peoples' Self Help Housing has many units for low income residents. "The truth is I never thought this was going to happen," said Valerie Lambert, a new resident. For the past six months, she had been living in her car before she was told about the new housing. She applied and qualified. Jeanette Duncan with People's Self Help Housing said, "We set aside units for people that have a history of homelessness, are in the shelter, that cycle in and out." Other similar projects are in the works in Avila Beach, Goleta, and in Ventura. |
