Weingart Foundation Awards Grant

The Weingart Foundation has awarded Peoples' Self-Help Housing a $100,000 grant for core operating support over a two year period.

The grant will be used to strengthen the mission of Peoples' Self-Help Housing to provide affordable housing and programs leading to self-sufficiency for low income families, seniors, and special needs groups on California's Central Coast. PSHH has developed and now manages over 1,200 afoordable residential housing units in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties.

Founded in 1951, the B.W. Foundation was established by Ben Weingart and his wife Stella. The name was changed to "Weingart Foundation" in 1978. Mr. Weingart died in 1980 at the age of 92. During his lifetime he built an estate composed principally of hotels, shopping centers and apartment buildings. He developed affordable housing for thousands of families in Southern California and was well known as one of the principal developers of the City of Lakewood and Lakewood Center.

Because of Mr. Weingart's life long concern for the welfare of the homeless, destitute, and people in need, the Foundation has focused its grant making on programs that address the needs of the underserved. During the past 36 years (1972-2009), the Foundation authorized grants of more than $856 million.

Lights on After School Celebrations

Peoples' Youth Education Enhancement Programs (YEEP) celebrated "Lights On Afterschool" along with thousands of other organizations nationwide on October 22. The event celebrates the importance and success of quality after-school youth programs.

At Guadalupe YEEP, youngsters worked hard on their LOA posters-- winners received generous educational prizes. Forty students participated in dance class demonstrations by Cal Poly. Guadalupe Police Chief George Mitchell and Sgt. Molly Hansen were special guests and stayed for the entire event to show their support of the importance of after school programs. We had great fun and we look forward to doing this event year after year.
Hillary Colvin & Marc Durham, Educators

The Lights On event at our Paso Robles Learning Center was a great success. 70 of our students, their siblings, 50 parents, school district staff, and community members participated! Featured were three dance performances by 25 of our girls, Halloween crafts, and a "Cinderella" puppet show. The parents proudly watched their children perform. The center was then turned into a Carnival with games, prizes and face painting. Popcorn and apples were served as a fun snack.
Kim Gaspar, Educator

Fifty students, volunteers, parents, and guests enjoyed our celebration in Carpinteria. Students and friends from Dahlia Court and Camper Park participated in the open house event. The classroom was broken up in different stations with origami, mask painting, homework, reading and board games, as well as outdoor soccer and community garden. The students helped select activities, paint signs, decorate the classroom, and bake treats.

Peoples' Needs Toys and Cash for Kids

Stuff the BusFor the fifth year, Peoples' is sponsoring a wonderful holiday campaign that helps poor children in our housing. The Stuff the Bus Campaign provides holiday gifts for 600 kids living in Goleta, Santa Barbara, and Carpinteria. For many of these children, these are the only gifts that they receive at this time of year. There are a couple of opportunities for you or your business to get involved!

Cash gifts or sponsorship available from $5,000-$250 (Santa, Sleigh, Ms. Claus, Elf and Reindeer) offer various levels of recognition and marketing opportunities. Donations of new, unwrapped toys or book gift cards may be dropped off at PSHH offices in SLO or Santa Barbara.

Please contact Monica Iverson at monicai@pshhc.org or (805) 962-5152 x220 to donate or for more information.

Is a Gift of Real Estate Right for You?
A gift of real estate to PSHH may be right for you if . . .

  • You hold residential, commercial or undeveloped real estate that has risen in value and that you no longer wish to maintain.
  • You are concerned about rising real estate taxes and the capital gains cost of selling the property.
  • The property is useful to our mission or is marketable, and it is environmentally secure.

Peoples' Self-Help Housing is happy to consider gifts of residential, commercial and undeveloped real estate. As with donations of other types of appreciated property, gifts of real estate secure a charitable income tax deduction for you, based on the fair market value of the property, with no capital gains liability for the transfer to us.

  • You can deliver real estate to PSHH in several ways:
  • Through an outright donation;
  • Through the donation of a fractional interest in the property;
  • As the basis for a gift plan that will pay you income, similar to a unitrust.
  • By giving us your home and reserving the right to continue living there for your lifetime (a retained life estate)

When you are considering a gift of real estate, keep two considerations in mind:

  1. First, we will gratefully review your gift offer and evaluate the condition and marketability of the proposed real estate, reserving the final say on acceptance.
  2. Second, the IRS requires donors of real estate to secure an independent appraisal to establish the fair market value of the property. We can assist you in following the IRS procedures for this appraisal.

If you would like to help further the mission of Peoples' Self-Help Housing to provide affordable housing and programs leading to self-sufficiency for low income households, seniors and special needs group, please contact Rochelle Rose CFRE, Director of Development, at (805) 962-5152 x227 or email rocheller@pshhc.org. Inquiries are confidential.
