Stuff the Bus Campaign

Our 4th Annual Stuff the Bus Campaign will bring hope and joy during the 2008 holiday season to hundreds of children residing at Peoples' Self-Help Housing rental complexes in Santa Barbara.
Sponsorship opportunities range from $250 to $5,000. Call 962-5152 for 2008 sponsorship and volunteer opportunities. Donate new, unwrapped toys for children age infant to 11 years old and merchant gift cards for teenagers.
Our resident children will be very grateful for the community's support and your donations of new toys and gift cards. See a list of drop off locations.

Youth Education Shines in Paso Robles!
Now in the second year of a five-year grant, the Youth Education Enhancement Program (YEEP) at Canyon Creek apartments is in full swing. The 21st Century Grant is funded by the California Department of Education After School Programs. The daily program is coordinated by PSHH Educator Jamie Walker, who holds a Master's degree in Spanish from Cal State Sacramento and holds a cross cultural bilingual teaching credential. Ms. Walker is assisted by para educators Emily Kommel and Marilu Raya, as well as volunteers.
Sixty children from four local elementary schools benefit from the after school program which features daily homework assistance, nutritious snack, physical activity, and an educational enhancement activity, such as drama, art, science, math, cooking, or library reading time. During the past five years, PSHH has developed youth education programs at six centers in Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Santa Barbara, and Carpinteria.
YEEP and other quality after school care programs have been proven to increase literacy, raise STAR language arts and math test results, and to enhance state education curriculum. To support the youth education program, call program supervisor Rochelle Rose, PSHH Fund Development Director, at (805) 962-5152 x227.

Planned Giving Corner:
IRA Charitable Rollover Extension
On October 3, 2008, President Bush signed legislation (Public Law 110-343), which includes an extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover originally enacted as part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006. The extension is retroactive, applying to distributions made throughout both the 2008 and 2009 tax years.
The extension allows individuals 70½ and older to donate up to $100,000 from their IRAs to charities tax-free. If you would like information on donating your IRA, or a portion of your IRA, to Peoples' Self-Help Housing, please call Rochelle Rose CFRE, Fund Development Director, at (805) 962-5152 x227 or email rocheller@pshhc.org.
