Peoples' Manages Farmworker Housing in Carpinteria

Peoples' Manages Farmworker Housing in Carpinteria

Peoples' Self-Help Housing has accepted the request of St. Joseph's Church to take over the management of the Chapel Court housing complex in Carpinteria. The 28-unit complex was built as a farm worker housing project in the early 1980's. Peoples' non-profit professional management team The Duncan Group took over in March this year. Peoples' is making improvements and assessing future repairs needed at the site. Betty Campero was appointed the on-site property manager at Chapel Court.

Partners in a Vision to End Chronic Homelessness

Phillip F. Mangano, Executive Director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Hoelessness Newsletter

Seven years ago, who would have predicted the first national documented decreases in homelessness in the nation, including in street and chronic homelessness? The first documented national decrease in homelessness was achieved, a 30% decrease in street and chronic homelessness and a 12% overall decrease between 2005 and 2007.

Who would have believed that 20 Federal agencies, 53 Governors, more than 850 Mayors and County Executives, and business and civic leaders would be partnered through strategic business planning to the idea of using the verb "end" with the noun "homelessness"? Who would have thought that federal spending targeted to homelessness would have nearly doubled? Who would have expected a reframing of the issue of homelessness and its solutions that moved discussion to a focus on outcomes and that emphasis leading to the identification by consumers of the central antidote to homelessness, housing. Who would have imagined that the most humane, effective, and innovative solution to end homelessness - Housing First approach (the rapid rehousing of homeless people with support services) would come directly from listening to vulnerable people living on the streets and would become the dominant strategy for ending homelessness? Who would have conceived of the economic consequences of homelessness as the frontier of research through cost benefit analysis, proving to be the decisive mobilizer of political will among jurisdictional leaders?

These were difficult to imagine or believe, yet they are the reality in our country today. The dedication you have made in the field and our partnership has accomplished what many would deem to be impossible.

* Peoples' Self-Help Housing board and staff actively leads and participates in the "Ten Year Plans to End Chronic Homelessness" Commissions in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties.

Are you Sitting Under a Shade Tree that You Did Not Plant?

Supporters of Peoples' Self-Help Housing can create a legacy and support the organization and its mission for generations to come. A will and other estate options can be used to support your loved ones, as well as Peoples' and its good work.

If you do not have a will, you are not alone. A majority of Americans do not have a will. It is never too early to write a will; it can only be too late. Without a will, the probate court will make decisions about the distribution of your assets. No assets will be given to any charitable organization, no matter how important they were to you during your lifetime.

A properly prepared will is a very effective means to accomplish many goals, including charitable intentions. A bequest can be written to give a percentage of your estate, a residual amount (after expenses and other bequests have been deducted), or a stated amount to the charities that you specify. For a confidential no-obligation conversation on your estate plan, contact Rochelle Rose CFRE, PSHH Development Director at (805) 962-5152 x227 or rocheller@pshhc.org.

"A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit." D. Elton Trueblood.
