Senior Volunteer at YEEP
Hermina Sauberman is a daily volunteer at Peoples' Youth Education Enhancement Program (YEEP) in Paso Robles. Hermina works through a program called SCSEP (Senior Community Services Employment Program) which is part of the federal stimulus package. A Paso Robles resident, Hermina previously was employed as an editor. She helps children read and teaches them how to play chess! Physical activity is a daily part of the YEEP program so Hermina plays ball and jump rope with the students. She arrives at the YEEP center an hour before the children arrive and help Educator Kim Gaspar get ready for the program day. Kim says, "Hermina is warm, kind, and very helpful in the classroom. It is like having a grandmother there every day to teach the kids." Thanks Hermina! _________________________________________________________________________ Dahlia Court Progresses in Carpinteria
The Carpinteria Architectural Review Board recently voted to pass Peoples' affordable housing addition on to the next level of review by the Carpinteria Planning Commission. The $8.25 million Dahlia Court project expansion includes 33 new two- and three-bedroom affordable units in four two-story buildings, as well as a new community education center and play area. A 100-foot green buffer zone sits between the project and Highway 101 to the south. Peikert Group Architects is the project designer under the supervision of PSHH Rental Housing Development Director Kenneth Trigueiro. _________________________________________________________________________ PSHH Celebrates 40 Years in 2010!

Each request for assistance was carefully analyzed. First, the client household was visited by a Peoples' case worker for assessment. Then, the household request and client description was prepared in a report form for review for possible fulfillment. This grant also provided much-needed assistance that filled gaps of services that were needed as a result of the overwhelming social affects of the recession and economic meltdown in the housing and financial industries. Peoples' supportive housing program case workers were able to evaluate individual and household needs to provide financial assistance and to address the social problems and stresses resulting from unemployment, reduced hours, layoffs, lack of money, etc. In these cases, the families/individuals had no other resources available to them. In addition to the 73 people helped by direct financial assistance, Peoples' supportive housing program was able to make 18 homeless placements (39 individuals) as a result of the Economic Recovery Fund. Thanks to the Santa Barbara Foundation for this valuable support. _________________________________________________________________________ Staff News
