PSHH Resident Assistance Fund Needs Your Help

With the economic downturn felt locally and nationwide, many of our low-income residents have to cut costs in places most of us would consider unthinkable. Some try to sell their only means of transportation to their job, some cut off utility services, and others simply do not refill a prescription which can severely compromises their health! However, these cost cutting measures help put food on the table for their families.

Requests for rent and utility assistance, medical devices, and food have greatly increased at Peoples', each case as compelling as the next. Limited funding prevents us being able to help everyone. Your contribution NOW will make a difference to a family in need. Donations to our "Resident Assistance Fund" are carefully considered on a case by case basis by a committee comprised of PSHH social worker, a member of our finance department, and others. Your tax-deductible donation will be carefully used to help those most in need.

You can help by making a donation on-line at www.pshhc.org or call Rochelle Rose, Fund Development Director, at (805) 962-5152 x227 for more information.

Four Montecito Churches Join to Help a Neighbor in Carpinteria

A group of over 50 volunteers from four Montecito churches worked together on three consecutive Saturdays in February to do temporary repairs to the restrooms and the laundry room at PSHH's Carpinteria Camper Park. Volunteers from the "Community of Montecito Churches" (M4) who participated are from All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal, El Montecito Presbyterian, Montecito Covenant, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic churches.

The Camper Park was purchased by Peoples' Self-Help Housing in 2004. The park was meant to be a place for travelers to hook up their campers for a temporary stay, however, many low-income people ended up living there full time. At time of purchase there were over 100 families, some with up to five children, living in small, deteriorating campers. Peoples' improved security, made renovations and began to refer families to other PSHH properties to eliminate crowding and unsanitary living conditions.

PSHH is planning to redevelop the Camper Park with new replacement rental housing which will be called "Casas de las Flores". Residents have been and will be gradually moved to other PSHH affordable properties prior to the start of construction. The new housing is planned to be completed in 2011. In the meantime, organizations such as the "Community of Montecito Churches" are helping to improve the facilities in order to provide a better quality of life for the camper residents who are technically categorized as 'homeless' because of the fragile and temporary nature of their living conditions.

Board News:
Father Charles Stacy Joins PSHH Board

Father Charles StacyFather Charles Stacy has been elected to the Board of Directors of Peoples' Self-Help Housing, it was announced by Dieter Eckert, M.D.

Stacy retired in 2008 after 31 years as rector of the St. Mark's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church in Los Olivos. He and his wife, Shirley, live in Solvang. He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley, a Master's in Theology from the Church Divinity School at Berkeley, and a Master's in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from California State University, San Francisco.

Upon ordination, he worked in San Francisco where, with a group of Jesuits and Episcopalians, started a community organization which helped stabilize the outer Mission District. He later worked at a church in Carmel for four years. Fr. Stacy has served on the County of Santa Barbara and City of Solvang Human Services Commissions, Community Action Commission, and many other organizations.

"The lack of affordable housing is a problem that needs to be addressed. A lot of people who rented here can't afford to do so anymore. If anyone can figure out how to meet these challenges, it is Peoples' Self-Help Housing. I look forward to serving even in these tough times."
