Durham Joins PSHH as Educator in Guadalupe

Marc Durham replaces Sophie Vogel who left for the Bay area. Marc and Hillary Colvin coordinate the Youth Education Enhancement Program (YEEP) at Peoples' Riverview housing complex in Guadalupe.

This academically-based after-school program not only serves youth from the 80-residence Riverview Townhomes but also children from the Guadalupe Union School District who are bused to our quality program during the school year.

This afternoon program also operates over the summer with lots of fun reading, arts, recreation, and science activities. YEEP is starting a vegetable garden this summer!

Marc was already working as a substitute for YEEP. A UCSB graduate, Durham has worked as a tutor with at risk youth and an English as a Second Language instructor.

New YEEP substitutes are Fe Demition, a Santa Maria teacher who was raised in the Phillipines, and Karina Cervantes, a graduate of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. Karina grew up in Los Alamos in one of Peoples' self-help homes that her parents helped to build.

When Preparation Meets Opportunity

Preparing now for the future through thoughtful disbursements designed to benefit not only your heirs, but your favorite charities as well, takes careful planning, but the benefits can be enormous.

Some years ago, the great Dodger shortstop Maury Wills gave an interview after breaking the major league record for stolen bases. The commentator asked Wills if he felt lucky. The shortstop replied yes, but defined luck as:

"...when preparation meets opportunity."

While you may be particularly passionate about the work of one or more charitable organizations, you may also feel that you are currently limited in the amount of financial support you can offer. You may worry about outliving your resources and have concerns that a large charitable donation might impact your future financial security. Or you may be unwilling to do anything that could reduce the size of the estate you hope to pass on to your spouse or heirs. These are legitimate concerns.

Board News

Mirella Ortega-Alvarez has been elected to the board of directors of Peoples' Self-Help Housing. A Carpinteria resident, Mirella also serves on the board of Chapel Court Housing, a farm worker housing complex in Carpinteria that Peoples' was recently asked to manage. She is also volunteers at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, St. Joseph's Parish, and the American Youth Soccer Organization.

"I want to commit 100% to the Peoples' Self-Help Housing organization and the community. I am especially interested in health services, affordable safe rental housing, and Peoples' Youth Education Enhancement Program," stated Ortega-Alvarez.

Self-Help Homes Make Progress in Templeton

The first four families have been pre-qualified for loans to purchase lots and materials to build their first homes in the 29-unit Templeton self-help housing development. The families are expected to close escrow and begin building in August, as soon as final approval is granted for their loans. Applications for the remaining 22 self-help homes are being accepted at Peoples' San Luis Obispo office, 3233 Empleo Street.

PSHH is also expecting to receive approval from the county to install public improvements (underground utilities, streets, sidewalks, drainage basin) on an adjacent 29 lot subdivision later this summer. We expect that another 29 households will be able to start building their own homes in early 2010.
