PSHH Meets the Challenge in Carpinteria PSHH Meets the Challenge in Carpinteria
PSHH is meeting the challenge of affordable rental housing in Carpinteria, a small community nine miles south of Santa Barbara, where the economy is based on tourism and agriculture, specifically avocados, greenhouse flowers, and bedding plants. In 2004 at the request of city leaders, PSHH took over a deteriorating and crime-ridden camper park on Via Real next to the freeway. PSHH made many improvements including gating and fencing, rule enforcement, refurbishing bathroom, shower, and laundry facilities, and the addition of a youth education center trailer. 70 households were relocated to other nearby PSHH properties. The next step is to relocate the remaining 73 families who are still housed in tiny, dilapidated, cramped trailers, so that new affordable two- and three-bedroom housing units can be built. It is Peoples' model not to displace low-income families, but to replace or refurbish existing housing for these households. Approval of plans is pending in various City of Carpinteria departments. _________________________________________________________________________ Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Fair, June 19th

Four Montecito Churches are working together to provide 900 backpacks filled with school supplies for Peoples' Self-Help Housing students from Carpinteria to Guadalupe. Members from the "Community of Montecito Churches" include All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, El Montecito Presbyterian Church, Montecito Covenant Church, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. On Saturday, July 19, 2008 from 10 a.m. to noon, volunteers will meet at El Montecito Presbyterian Church, 1455 East Valley Road, to sort and stuff the backpacks. Backpacks and school supplies were donated by the four churches and their parishioners. Peoples' Self-Help Housing will deliver the backpacks the following week to children in the housing developments. "The leadership and parishioners of the four churches are truly grateful for this opportunity to serve these local children of lower income families, through Peoples' Self-Help Housing, and to help guarantee that they have the tools necessary to thrive in their school environments," said Don Johnson, spokesman for the Community of Montecito Churches. _________________________________________________________________________ Planned Giving CornerPeoples' Self-Help Housing is a California non-profit charitable organization that relies on private gifts, trusts and bequests to support its programs.
