Local Banks Support PSHH

The Wells Fargo Foundation has recently awarded $45,000 to Peoples'. The unrestricted grant will be used to further the mission.

"Wells Fargo is proud to support organizations like Peoples' Self-Help Housing, who are working to strengthen our communities. We direct our giving to areas that we believe are important to the future of our nation's vitality and success: community development, education, and human services," stated Aubrey Kachmarik, San Luis Obispo Wells Fargo Branch Manager.

YEEPHeritage Oaks Bank also recently donated $1,500, which will be used to support the YEEP program for 65 children attending the Learning Center at Canyon Creek Apartments. The youth education center is available to resident children as well students from area elementary schools for after-school homework assistance, math and reading instruction, physical activity and recreation, as well as cultural enrichment activities.

"Heritage Oaks Bank is excited to provide assistance to this modern learning environment for disadvantaged students in the Paso Robles area," said Mitch Massey, Senior Vice President of Heritage Oaks Bank. "Assisting with the educational needs of our young people and helping solve the affordable housing crisis is part of the bank's mission," added Massey.

Business Community Helps Out at Holiday Time!

Two businesses are helping Peoples' in creative ways during the holidays!

CapitalSource Bank in Santa Barbara is hosting a gift tree where staff and bank patrons can add gift cards for Peoples' needy kids.

PSHH also recently received a note from Thompson Naylor Architects of Santa Barbara, "I'm glad that we can help with your effort to provide a wonderful Christmas for all the children in the city. Annually, in the past, we drew names and then exchanged gifts at our holiday party. This year we have decided to change that and instead, give our gifts to Peoples' Self Help Housing." Happy Holidays, Kimberly M. Sven-Brown, Office Manager.

In Memory of Lee Bailey

Lee BaileyLee Bailey was a resident of the Victoria Hotel and passed away November 10, 2009, the day before Veteran's Day. Born Sept. 6, 1948, Mr. Bailey served in Vietnam in a Special Forces unit in the late 1960's. Lee was a good soldier his whole life, but his life was full of tragedies. When Lee was very young he lost his twin brother, mother, and father in an auto accident on San Marcos Pass Road in Santa Barbara County. Lee was placed in an orphanage for the next ten years. The Bailey family of Santa Monica then adopted Lee; he became a great surfer and skateboarder.

He suffered a serious accident that left him in a hospital for nearly two years. He recovered but it was difficult for him to find work. Lee ended up homeless and he struggled to find a place to live for many years. In 2004 he found the Victoria Hotel operated by Peoples' Self-Help Housing. Being in the hotel enabled Lee to heal and to rest, something he wasn't able to do for a long time. He said many times that Mrs. Jeanette Duncan (PSHH executive director) was an angel to him and how much the program at PSHHC helped him to heal. Lee's best friends were Lindal Iverson, another Vietnam veteran, who passed away in 2008, and Bill Hess, who was his caretaker in Lee's last years.

Lee Bailey will be remembered for his love of his country, determination, compassion, and appreciation of his fellow man. Donations in Lee's memory can be made to Peoples' Self-Help Housing, 26 E. Victoria St., Santa Barbara CA 93101 or visit www.pshhc.org or call (805) 962-5152.
