Summer Camp Shines in Carpinteria!

With summer school cancelled for the second year in a row in Carpinteria, students at Peoples’ Self-Help Housing’s Dahlia Court complex didn’t have many options for low cost summer enrichment.

Thanks to a generous grant from All-Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church of Santa Barbara, Peoples’ Youth Education Enhancement Program was able to serve nearly 50 elementary students with a nine-week summer program. Not only did All Saints help fund the program, they also provided 35 volunteers with various talents to serve as helpful tutors, chaperones, computer instructors, cookie makers, field trip guides and docents, etc. contributing to the success of the program. Older students received community service hours for volunteering.

Students have participated in a wide variety of activities this summer. They have explored the coastal land of Carpinteria, including local tide pools and salt marsh. Students have had the opportunity to do ceramics, study music, dance, garden, and participate in art workshops.

Brittany Hadidian, YEEP Educator, said, “We have been fortunate to be able to take students on field trips to the Ty Warner Sea Center, library, Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History, as well as a train ride to Santa Barbara for a fun day at Kids World at Alameda Park. The students have also been able to read with volunteers, so that they will be ready to go back to school in the fall and will not suffer a summer learning loss.”

. Summer activities will conclude with a potluck, dance performance, and celebration at Dahlia Court on Friday, August 13th at 5 p.m.
