Milestone for Goleta: "Ellwood Apartments", First Affordable Housing Complex Approved by City, Celebrates Completion
Peoples' Self-Help Housing Hopes to Encourage More Affordable Housing in Goleta
Goleta, CA, November 13, 2006-A dedication celebration and ceremony will take place on November 15 to introduce "Ellwood Apartments" to the community. The completion of the project has been much anticipated as it represents the first affordable housing complex approved by the new city of Goleta to provide more affordable housing.
Built and owned by the nonprofit Peoples' Self-Help Housing, the eight new permanently affordable apartments in Goleta are now occupied. This past September, Goleta City Council members assisted Peoples' Self-Help Housing with a lottery drawing, which determined the order in which the 75 applications for Ellwood Apartments were reviewed.
The one and two-bedroom units vary from about 580 to 900 square feet in size. The complex includes a laundry facility and is located near public transportation routes, shopping areas and Girsh Park recreational area.
Other PSHH developments in the city of Goleta include the nearby Storke Ranch Apartments and Isla Vista Apartments. Peoples' Self-Help Housing also owns and manages a number of affordable housing properties in neighboring cities. These properties include Victoria St. Bungalows I & II, Victoria Hotel, Milagro de Ladera Apartments in Santa Barbara, and Dahlia Court Apartments and Camper Park in Carpinteria.
Partners in this project include Design ARC, Inc. and Penfield & Smith Engineers. Funding partners include the City of Goleta, County of Santa Barbara, Montecito Bank & Trust, and the State Department of Housing & Community Development.
