"California Stories Uncovered" at Faulkner Gallery
Please Join Residents of Milagro de Ladera as They Share Stories About Their History and Cultural Diversity
Santa Barbara, CA, May 9, 2005Santa Barbara is participating in a State-wide campaign by the California Council for the Humanities to "uncover the stories beneath the headlines, statistics and stereotypes" as part of California Stories Uncovered. Peoples' Self-Help Housing was awarded a grant to participate on behalf of 10 resident families from the Ladera Street Apartments, which is owned and managed by the nonprofit affordable housing organization.
A book called "Las Historias de Ladera" (The Histories of Ladera), is filled with stories of the ten families, chronicling their histories, depicting the hardships of assimilation and finding a new life in Santa Barbara. The book was made possible by a grant from the California Council for the Humanities, and is available at the event. You can also read the stories at www.pshhc.org.
"The families at Ladera Street Apartments are honored to be a part of this amazing cultural and educational opportunity that explores the stories behind what brought families to Santa Barbara, their hopes and dreams, their struggles, and their adventures along the way," said Jeanette Duncan, Executive Director of Peoples' Self-Help Housing.
