Santa Barbara News-Press 2004 Holiday Fund Articles
The News-Press Holiday Fund was established in 1949 by former News-Press owner Thomas Storke, who was shocked at the cost of a wheelchair after he broke his leg. Since then, the Holiday Fund has brought in more than $2 million from individuals, local groups, companies and foundations.
On Nov. 13, 2004, the News-Press Lifetime Achievement Award dinner kicked off the drive, which ran through the end of the year. At the banquet, the paper honored four community leaders and announced this year's fund recipients: People's Self-Help Housing Corporation and K-9 Placement and Assistance League.

Though George Rangel has finally quit jogging, he is not, by any means, in his dotage. At 73, he is known as something of a Forrest Gump in his community. "People see me walking to the library, to the hospital, to the store," said Mr. Rangel, a spry man with short, curly hair. "I do it because I want to keep in good shape. I want to have my legs until I'm old!"
