Goleta City Council Approves its First Affordable Housing

Peoples' Self-Help Housing to Build Apartments in Ellwood for Local Residents

Goleta, CA, June 18, 2002—Last night, the first affordable apartment plan was approved by the Goleta City Council by a 3-1 vote with one member absent.

Citing the good reputation and experience of Peoples' Self-Help Housing, which will head the project, the Council decided to move forward to create more affordable housing for the residents of Goleta.

"We are pleased to be part of the City of Goleta's effort to provide affordable housing for its residents," said Jeanette Duncan, Executive Director of Peoples' Self-Help Housing. "We look forward to a long-term relationship with the City."

Peoples' Self-Help Housing currently manages two other affordable housing apartment complexes in the Goleta area including, Storke Ranch Apartments with 36 units and the Isla Vista Apartments with 56 units. There is currently a long waiting list for these apartments.

Peoples' Self-Help Housing, a 32 year-old award winning non-profit organization, owns and manages 27 affordable housing apartment complexes on the Central Coast serving over 4,000 low-income families, seniors, and special needs households. It has also helped over 1000 low-income families build their first home through their Home Ownership "Sweat Equity" program.
