In 1989 it was discovered that Unocal's underground pipes had been leaking petroleum products into the soil. Unocal publicly accepted responsibility for the contamination. The clean-up required some Avila Beach residents to relocate. Former SLO County Supervisor Peg Pinard negotiated with Unocal to include a development of affordable housing units as part of the clean up. Peoples' Self-Help Housing was selected as the affordable housing developer.
“We are very pleased to be a part of the overall effort to improve the Avila Beach community by providing 29 new, well designed affordable apartments,” said Jeanette Duncan, Executive Director, Peoples’ Self-Help Housing.
Anticipated completion for this development is expected to be in the fall of 2008.
