Montecito Churches Provide 800 Backpacks filled with School Supplies for Peoples' Self-Help Housing Kids

This successful event was held on Saturday, July 28, 2007

Four Montecito Churches worked together to provide 800 backpacks filled with school supplies for Peoples' Self-Help Housing students from Carpinteria to Guadalupe. In addition to the backpacks and school supplies, 800 Payless Shoe Source gift cards have been donated by a member of one of the churches to ensure that children have new "back to school" shoes. Members from the "Community of Montecito Churches" include All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, El Montecito Presbyterian Church, Montecito Covenant Church, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Green & White Backpacks were also donated
by the San Luis Obispo Presbyterian Church
and Costco/K-Mart.
These were collected for our northern Santa Barbara
and San Luis Obispo County tenants.

Church volunteers met at the Covenant Church to sort and stuff the backpacks. All backpacks and school supplies were donated by the four churches and their parishioners. Peoples’ Self-Help Housing delivered all the backpacks the following week to the housing developments.

“The leadership and parishioners of the four churches are truly grateful for this opportunity to serve these local children of lower income families, through Peoples’ Self-Help Housing, and to help guarantee that they have the tools necessary to thrive in their school environments,” said Don Johnson, spokesman for the Community of Montecito Churches.

Last year the Community of Montecito Churches assembled AIDS Caregiver Kits for the nation of Rwanda in partnership with the Christian relief and development organization World Vision.
